Today we worked on high voltage lines,there was a problem on one pole.The isolator(including bolt and nut) that was used to isolate the pole and the line had fallen out.Our technical manager first showed us how to switch the lines off by disconnecting the fuses using a link stick,then he went on to show us how to earth the lines using earthing cables and earth spikes.We first hammered the earth spikes on the ground for about one meter and clapped one earth cable lid(different cables) on each spike then we clapped the STILL TO EDIT

Today we busy at the guesthouse,we did maintenance and inspections.we checked all the lights,lights switch,plugs and electrical equipment for functionality.We went room to room checking all that and we replaced 3 edison screw bulbs(75watts),1 halogen down lighter and 1 candle light(40w).After then we went outside to check garden lights and pool lights and everything was working fine.This will in the future help me if I have to do maintenance and inspections.
Then we did carpentry,we repaired cabinet 2 cabinet doors at the caravan park which were broken,we started first by fiing the wood where there was glue,then glued the wood together using wood glue and staple gun,then we put the glasses back on door frames.This will in the future help me if i am faced with the task of doing carpentry.

Today we worked at the control room in the segoale dam,we were busy with the painting of the control room.We started first by scrabbing the walls using sand paper and chisels,then we used poly filla to close some of the holes on wall.After that we mixed the paint and poured it in the tray,then we started painting using paint brush and rollers,we painted first and second code.
After we finished paint the wall,we went on to paint the floor.First we swept the floor with brooms,then we moped the floor with soap and water.We then mixed the paint and the paint hardener,after then we started painting using new paint brush and rollers,we painted first and second code.This will in the future help me if i am faced with the task of painting.
Hour after we finished painting we went to work in the mechanical work,we had to install four flourscent lights.We started by measuring the size of flourescent fittings and were they going to be installed,we drilled the holes for the fittings then mounted them on the wall using fischer plugs and spirit level then we pulled the wires through conduit pipes and connected the lights.We tested the installation and we installed the flourescent tubes and covers.we put on power after testing and everything was working well.This will in the future help me if I have to do installation.

30SEPTEMBER2009

Today we went back to the workshop to continue with the painting,we started on the other side of workshop which was not painted,firstly we gathered all the materials and equipments needed for the task including trays,paint brush and rollers,paint,dust mask ,overolls etc.we started by first mixing the paint and paint hardener,poured it into the tray and started painting using paint brush and rollers.we used dust mask to protect ourself from the harmful smell that can harm our lungs.This will help us if we come around a situation were we have to paint.

Hour after we finished painting we went to the computer room to continue with microsoft excel,we again learned different method of calculating,minupulating words,how to cancel and add rows,column and cells.This will in the future help me if I come around problem with maths,personal budget or business transaction.

29SEPTEMBER2009

We are still at the workshop,we continued with the painting of the second code,after we finished painting we led the paint to dry so that we can start moving the tables,equipments snd materials to the painted side of the workshop so that we can paint the other side.

After lunch we went to the computer rooms to do microsoft excel,we learned all calculations and the formulas.The way to use the graphs and how to format excel.This will help us if faced with the problem of e.g personal budget,business transactions etc

25SEPTEMBER2009

Today we had to clean,organise and paint the workshop.First we started by removing all the dust and dirts from the workshop,packed all the steel tables,equipment and materials on the one side of the workshop and some to our classroom,so that we can be able to start painting the other side of the workshop,we swept and moped the floor.We organised all the materials we will need including paint,paint brush,tray,dust musk etc.We painted the first code at the workshop and passage that goes toward the classroom.We left it to dry for a day and will continue with the second code the next day.This will in the future help us if we are faced with a painting work.

24SEPTEMBER2009

sondela new offices
We started the work by first installing three uninterupted power suppliers in the offices,the first one was for the server room,the second was for the admin offices and the last one was for the funseekers offices.We again had to do fault finding because the UPS at the server room kept on tripping,so we did fault find,it was found that the neutrals were mixed on different circuits.This will in the future help us if we have to install UPS's or are faced with a problem were we have to do fault finding.

We again had to clean the offices and organise the furniture(chairs,tables,cupboards,etc) because the offices are going to be occupied soon.This will in the future help us if we have to organise or clean our workshop or other working areas.

15-19SEPTEMBER2009

Today we started with a new module of basic concepts of database,it contains information about microsoft access,we learned how to create table from scratch in design view,how to create a primary key and use it,how to switch views from spreadsheet view to the design view.We again learned how to manipulate data,create a form using the wizard and create a report using the wizard.This will in the future help us if we have to work on microsoft access.

14SEPTEMBER2009

We again went back to the sondela new offices,this time we went to install plugs that are mounted on top of the trunkings.We started first by pulling wires from the distribution board then we pulled them through to the five rooms we mounted the trunkings.The wires were pulled through the trunkings,then we started to install plugs after we tested the installation and switched the power on.This will help us if we have to do house and office installations.

SONDELA NEW OFFICES
We started first by preparing our tools,made sure that all safety equipment and materials needed are there,then we started measuring the length on the walls were the trunkings were going to be mounted.We then measured the trunkings according to the measurements we took on walls,then we started cutting the trunkings using a grinding machine and mounted them on the walls using a drilling machine and fischer plugs.We did the same thing on about five rooms.This will in the future help us if we come around the situation that demand for us to mount trunkings.

We did our routine inspections around the sondela reserve,we started first at the picinini restuarant then guest house,hall,offices,reception and caravan park.We checked all the light switch,plugs,appliances and different kinds bulbs for functionality.This will in future help me if I have to do maintainance,fault finding or repair electrical appliances and equipment.

INTERPRET AND USE INFORMATION FROM TEXT
Through this module we have learned how to:

This will in the future help me when coming to interpreting and using written information e.g in textbook,megazine,newspapers etc. and also help us to understand other peoples cultural beliefs,opinions and respect other people.It also taught us about the sacrifises we have to make in order to avoid misunderstanding and conflicts.

What we did today was part of the handyman course,we were busy at the new sondela office at town.Our task was to install trunkings for the cables of electricity,telephones,computers and all machinery used in offices.We first started by measuring length of walls then cut the trunkings according to the length using a grinder,we mounted the trunkings on the wall a drill machine and fischer plugs,we then used a screw driver to screw in the fischer plugs.This will in the future help me in case I want to install trunkings in my house or if somebody hires me to install them for him.

OPERATE ON LOW VOLTAGE NETWORKS(PRACTICALS)
Through the theory we did on this module,we are going to do some of this practical.
Our focus today is mainly on distribution boards and transformers.we started first by distribution boards,we went through the whole of sondela checking that all the DB's have warning signs,padlocks, the right sizes of circuit breakers and earth leakages for a particular purpose,the wiring and colours used are right,no loose connections,no dirt in the DB's,all DB's are well mounted and accessable.And on transformers what we basically did was we checked if the silica jel was still right,level of transformer oil,rust on transformer,if the transformer is well mounted and safe to work on.

OPERATE ON LOW VOLTAGE NETWORKS(THEORY)
Through this module we have learned how to:

• Identify low voltage breakers
• Testing of apparatus
• Understand regulations
• restore supply
• Plan and prepare to work on low voltage networks

We also learned how power travels from the plant to our houses(power ditridution grid).
Power is first generated from power plant then to transmission substation then through high voltage transmission lines to the power station,then to transformers and through power poles to the transformer drum then to our house.

Through this lesson we will in future be able to know how to deal with power stations in case we are employed in one or if we are working in a municipality we will be able to deal with power lines and transformers.

Day five of the handyman course

Today our task was to do maintenance,we went around sondela reception,the academy,piccinini restuant,workshop checking that all lights,lights swithches,plugs and specially distribution boards are in good working condition.The distribution boards we checked if there no loose connections as that can start fire,we also checked if the colour coding on the wires are right and if the distribution boards are neat.This was a great expirience as this will in future help me if I have to do maintenance check if maybe I am hired by a big company or maybe when I am doing a private job for my customers.

Day four of the handyman course
We are still busy with the bicycle stand cause we still have to put some finishing touches on stand before we start painting it,we have to first use a grinder to remove bumps were we welded.Then we started mixing the paints we want to use inside the container(spray gun) that is connected to the compressor,then we started spraying the bicycle stand and after we finished we put it outside so that it can dry out.

Third day of the handyman course
We are finished with the theorical part of the course and today we started with the practicals,our facilitator gave us task to do.Our task was to make a bicycle stand and we first started by taking pieces of metals bars from the scrapyard,measured them and cut them into the right pieces.We then joint the bars together according to the bicycle stand plan,we used welding equipment to join the bars together and all safety procedures we followed.After then we took sand paper and filed the rust away from the metal bars so that we can able to paint them.This was a nice expirience cause it will in the future help me if I want to make my own bicycle stand or if i have a business i could be able to do it for my customers.

Second day of the handyman course
Today we were learning about the ins and outs of a business,we were taught how to manage finance in terms thing like drawing a budget for the month and how to manage petty cash.Strategic planning we did thing how to target your market,location were you want your business,labour force and the materials you will need for your business.This will in the future help me if I want to open my own business and if I want to manage my own finance in business.

Today is the first day of the handyman course,we started by first reading the manual on the general maintenance.The manual is basically based on plumbing,bricklaying,welding , business and life related issues.First we started with the chapter concerning tools and equipment,we were showed different tools and equipment,how they are maintained and repaired.For grinders how to replace the blade,which blade to use on a specific task and also to use a measuring tape in case we want to measure something that needs to be cut.For the welding machine we were showed how to hold the welding clamp,the different types of welding rods.

Today we were still busy with the bicycle stand,we first started by filing the rust on the metal bars away using a sand paper,after filing the stand we started mixing the paint we were going to use to paint the stand,after that we put the paint inside the container that is joint to the compressor then we painted the stand.

Today we did a of welding and grinding,we were designing bicycle stands from scratch,we took scraps of metal bars from the scrap yard,cut them to the desired length by using a grinder,after we assembled the bars according to the bicycle stand sketch using a welding machine.

Today we were doing housekeeping at the storeroom and workshop,we started by putting everything back to its place and we dusted and lubricated all the machines,tools and equipment necessary.We swept and mopped the floors in workshop and storeroom.This will in the future teach us how we must clean up after we work at certain workplace to show that you are a professional.We then went to do our friday routine of doing inspections around sondela,we started at caravan park were we checked that all the distribution boards on each stand is functioning well,then we checked the lights on the same distribution boards.Then we checked the lights,lights switch and plugs for functionality at the ablution blocks,lapa,boma and moselesele.

Today we were working at the workshop,we were welding and grinding,the plan was to make metal rakes , stampers and make a usable wheelbarrow using old scraps of wheelbarrwos,we took pieces of metal bars from the scrap yard,measured them to the required length and cut them with a grinder.Then we used a welding machine to weld the pieces of metals together.This will in the future help if we have to build some structures,example:structure to mount distribution boards

Today we were working at segwale village,our task was to dig a trench for a electrical cables that were hanged on trees,we digged a 18meter long and 50cm deep trench,we put the cable in the trench and after covered the trench.After finishing we rewired the distribution board in the same house.Then we then went to class and started on a new module called adopt and maintain oral communication.Which will in the future help us to communicate with peoples in terms of presentations,giving speeches,meetings etc.The module also teaches you about the right attitude you have to use with different individuals

Yesteday(16JUNE2009) was a very exciting and expiriencial day,we were at Lethabo power station in verneeging.We always had a good theory on how electricity was generated but seing the actual practical side of it was very much amazing.we were showed how coals were taken from the coal yard next to the power station then to the power station.Then how they were crashed and how they used to boil water for steam,how the steam is used to turn the turbine blades and how the turbine blades are used to run the generator and how the generator generates electricity.And how the ashes from the goals are cleared.

Today we were doing maintenance and inspection at the managing director's house.we inspected all the light switch,socket outlets and lights for functionality.we replaced four 60w spotlights and repaired two light fitting that was broken and after that we went in class to do theory on the fundemantal module of measure,estimate and calculate physical quantities.

Today my task was to do maintainance around sondela,I fixed two flourescant lights at lapa which had a problem with internal wiring and replaced all the starters on each light,we also fixed a spotlight fitting.At caravan park there was one daynight swicth that was not working and caused the bulb to be on all the time,so we tested the switch and found that it was damaged.so we replaced the daynight switch with a new one.

Today our job was to check the types of light bulbs that was used around caravan park,horse stable and moselesele.The path(road) that leads to caravan park there was 12edison yellow energy savers(13w).Caravan park there was 19bionet yellow energy savers on ditribution boards,1spotlight.Pool at caravan park there was one spotlight.Laudry 2 white edison energy savers.Outside ablution block 8yellow bionet energy savers.Inside ablution block 9flourescant lights(58w),female toilets 7halogen lights and 11 white bionet energy savers backup lights,male toilets 6halogen lights(12v) and 8white bionet energy savers(13w)backup lights.Lapa 6flourescant lights(58w) and 6white bionet energy savers(13w)backup lights.Outside 1white bionet energy saver(13w),1flourescant light(36w),5spotlights.Boma 16yellow bionet energy savers(13w) and 1 halogen spotlight.Area around the horse stable,outside the ablution block there were 5spotlights,3ordinary white bionet bulbs.Inside horse stable 5flourescant lights(58w) and 1white bionet energy saver(13w)

Today we are only doing field work,our technical manager give us tusk to do,the tusk was to do inspection around caravan park,moselesele,picinini restuarant and reception area.at caravan park we replaced two energy savers,reception> one flourescant light and fixed a spot light that had a damaged ballast and at picinini>one candle light and two energy savers. so far everything was still alright and we ended up doing reseach on electrical components on the internet.

Another day of assessments,today is the last day of the assessments I just hope everything goes well.Today our assessors decided we should do modules on installing and commissioning electrical measuring instruments and control devices*Use mathematics in finance*repair and maintain electrical power tools.The assessments were not that difficult since some the stuff we did last year.we are still left with some few modules to do but we have to set another date for them and i hope it could be soon cause we are only left with fundamental modules.

Today was a very hectic day,we are started with our assessment,Mr Peter Nolta and Mr RS Hagemann were the assessors responsible for the assessment.We started the assessment with modules on install low voltage transformers*basic electronics circuits*maintain and repair,install and commission direct on line AC rotating machines and control gear.we were all individually given written tests to do,at the end of the day everything went well,i'm glad day one is has past even though tomorrow is still another day of assessments
